The footnotes alone are well worth the price of this classic Lloyd Kaufman tome.

5 out of 5 stars The Shocking True Story of Troma!   June 4, 2006
I grew up watching Troma movies. Ever since I was a wee tyke, I used to watch 'The Toxic Crusaders' on the television and grew up with films such as 'The Toxic Avenger', 'Sgt. Kabukiman, N.Y.P.D.', and the like, and have since become a rabid Tromaphile. So I was eager to read his autobiography, 'All I Need To Know About Filmmaking I Learned From 'The Toxic Avenger''.

While the commercials for the book claim that it can help you make your own independent film, it doesn't really live up to that standard. It does, however, give a very entertaining history lesson of Troma Studios: it's origins, it's rise to "fame", and how it's set set the bar for independent films for the last several decades, with a bunch of fun anecdotes sprinkled here and there, and even a Troma Movie Database in the back (which only goes up to the book's publishing date, 1997).
Lloyd Kaufman writes most of the book in a sarcastic tone; he constantly pokes fun at himself and takes very little of what he writes seriously, but not to the point that it becomes annoying; most of the time, it's really very funny, and never boring. It's an easy read. Plus there's lots of neat behind-the-scenes pictures for the more illiterate audience!

The book's target audience is Troma fans such as myself. Non-Troma fans will most likely not enjoy this book, mainly because...well, it's about Troma. Fans will definitely be interested in how this little low-budget company rose to such a prestigious level of infamy and some amusing stories behind thier favorite films.
It's a very informative, interesting, and entertaining read that I believe all Troma fans have a right to enjoy. I highly recommend it. Huzzah!

5 out of 5 stars Kaufman does it his way... bubbling green vomit and all.   April 20, 2006

No mear mortal can ignore this book. It's as freakishly and deliciously addictive as the best movies in the Troma catalog.

Even passing fans of the studio will loose sleep rereading the best parts, and making lists of the films they've had the misfortune to miss. The innocents will become believers... and the die-hards will spontaniously combust. (But that's understandable.)

This book has not only gotten me excited about the upcoming Toxie novels, but has rekindled the Troma fan in my heart. (Or some other suitable vital organ...)

Viva Troma Studios!

5 out of 5 stars great book...SUPPORT TROMA   April 11, 2006
Troma has provided us with movies unlike any others for years, and here is a book unlike any. This book is what you would expect coming for Lylod Kaufman, but so much more too. I have learned so much about making movies and the movie industry. Read this book if you are even semi-interested in makning movies, and especially if you are a fan of Troma. Plus the humor is terrific, causing me to laugh out loud many times. This was a truly excellent book.

If you call yourself a movie fan and love movies, please support Troma, for they make movies for all the right reasons, because they are movie fans and love movies.

5 out of 5 stars After I read this book, i said "Bible who?"   April 11, 2006
This book tells the shocking true story of Troma Studios and how it came to be. Troma is the longest running independent movie company, EVER! Their films include, The Toxic Avenger, Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD, Tromeo and Juliet, and so many more. After reading this book, you will feel a sense of self satisfaction in having done something worth doing. It is full of insight and laughs, truely a classic.
